René Paris (1881-1970) was a French animal sculptor who exhibited at the Salon since 1897. He produced several works purchased by the French State or French cities, such as his group entitled “In the Shorebreakers” acquired by the city of Le Croisic in 1913. The work exhibited in 1910 at the Salon was diverted from its original meaning and converted into a commemorative monument in homage to Hervé Rielle. His “Wolf-dog” in granite made in 1912, rewarded the same year with a bronze medal at the Salon of French Artists, was erected in 1928 in Saint-Lambert Square in Paris, on the site of the former Vaugirard gasworks. René Paris also produced a stone sculpture, “The Dead Lion” in 1922, installed for the War Memorial of the 130th Division, the location of which marks the extreme limit of the German advance, during the assault on Verdun during the First World War.
