A Beautiful Pair of 19th Century Faience Of Rouen Depicting
Summer and Winter.
This piece, commissioned in the mid to late 19th century,
Nicely proportioned and vibrant colors. Other copies are either smaller and/or
not in the original vibrant multi-color palette as this pair. A masterpiece of modeling from a series of
five enormous faience busts originally commissioned in 1730 from the Rouen manufactory
of Nicolas Fouquay. The theme was Apollo overseeing the Four Seasons. The
original Apollo is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum (London) with the Four
Seasons busts including this original piece of “Winter,” are at the
Louvre. The sculptures could be mounted inside a niche, on a fireplace,
