18th Century French Procencal Credenza In Walnut

Arlesienne
Height: 41 1/2″
Width: 56″
Depth: 27″

This superb 18th century French Louis XV Credence buffet
from Arles France is one of the most exceptional buffets.

The balance of lines has been finessed to perfection. The
ornamentation is refined without stiffness or conversely, ostentation—simply
pure with all the original elements and mechanism.

The top is rectangular with a refined shaped front and back
Angles. The rectangular shape has been enhanced with rounded edges and moldings
on the front softening any severity.

The two front door panels have refined asymmetrically shaped
Carved moldings on the raised panel which somewhat mirrors the two shapes of
the outer moldings. The apron is magnificently hand carved with rocaille motifs
and scrolling rinceaux  consisting of a
continuous wavy stem like motif from which smaller leafy stems or groups of
leaves branch out at more or less regular intervals. Iron keyhole
escutcheons, accented with top foliate carvings, which open to reveal two
interior shelves. All original warm grain and patina, and original hardware and
locks.

This is typical of the Arles region cabinet makers buffet De
Château . The rounded corners have beautifully carved acanthus leaves and
scrolled feet on hooves. The serpentine frame constructed in solid Walnut,
featuring deep carved designs in the Rococo taste on all exposed sides. Each of
the Buffet’s hinged doors in solid Walnut. Both feature a moulded edge,
cartouche-shaped central field. Accented by crisp floral & foliate
carvings, and with a fine depth and age to the Walnut.

This cabinetmaker was a superb artisan. The sides have two
asymmetrical panels meeting at the centre. There is original iron hardware
throughout. Outstanding patina with a beautiful shine like finish on this rare
18th century Chateau Credence “Small enfilade”

It might appear like the wood is sealed at first glance, but
it is not. The buffet surface is “cire rempli”, which is an old and
complicated finish used by skilled ebenistes in France… Hard to replicate,
but gives a brilliant look when done properly. This important Louis XV enfilade
will be the focal point in a room. Dining, living , bedroom, kitchen , hallway,
entryway.
